All server can petition to join said network, but a semi-monthly donation (to cover the costs of running the central server, and verifying member servers follow official guidelines) would be required to be recognized by the official release of the plugin.

We could leave most of the functionality in the plugin for others to make their own central server code if they wanted, with a forked version of the plugin. Central server code would be closed source, or under a restrictive license.

This is all hypothetical, and based on the popularity of the plugin post-release. This issue mainly exists for future reference.

I like this lots. But, like you said, would be based largely on the popularity. Maybe this will give me a reason to get back into web development... I could build a back-end to give "official" servers extra features... or something. I don't know, but there's potential somewhere in there.

I was thinking some sort of extended 'universe' where characters can be shared between servers. Other stuff like bungeecord integration are all possibilities.

A central website sounds like a great idea, and giving member servers the possibility to sell packages or accept donations from the website (as an alternative to Buycraft) may give them more of a reason to want to join the network. That might be overkill, though.
