Is this relevant for the GOG version of the game?

Yes. Make sure

The GOG directory path has no spaces or if it does that the path name is properly formatted (enclosed in double quotes) so the tool recognises the path correctly.
Use the correct version of Java. It used to require the 64 bit version to run
No need to run as adminstrator
