Hi Valve,
I have been following the VRS very closely and understand almost all aspects of the algorithm behind it.
My feedback is that the LAN rating component is too strong due to not taking event rating into consideration.
A LAN win is just 1.0 points no matter the opposition or the context.
If you sort the teams by the LAN rating subranking then ideally it should say something about which teams are the strongest and most in form LAN teams.
Well, that has been true for the most part but mainly due to LAN matches mostly being available in tier 1.
The whole premise of the correctness of the LAN rating component in its current implementation is that LAN matches are only available in important tournaments.
Now we see local tournaments and even national team tournaments offering LAN matches, meaning that mediocre teams get many LAN wins which have 0 competitive value at the top level but count mathematically just the same as the most important LAN wins in the scene.
Take Partizan as an example right now. They scored 6 LAN wins at IESF LAN for national teams representing Serbia.
The 6 LAN wins boost their ranking by a completely unfair amount.
Not only were the wins gained in a parallel tournament setup (national team competition) but setting that aside it still showcases the issue with calculation of LAN wins.
Mu suggestion is that you seriously consider adjusting the 1.0 points for a LAN win with either the level of the opponent or the event rating.
Its not fair that all LAN wins count the same no matter the context, when LAN win together with Bounty offered are the most significant factor in the VRS ranking.
You should verify your formula by setting up the perfect test case for exploiting the algorithm.
For LAN win i would exploit it by setting up a local tournament for 8 teams where all teams played 1 bo1 LAN match against each other.
In this scenario a small team could win 7 LAN matches within a week and catapult unfairly up the VRS ranking.
Which is basically what Partizan and Metizport and Navi Javelin have done.
