Is there an existing issue for this?

  • I have searched the existing issues

Are you using any gamescope patches or a forked version of gamescope?

  • The issue occurs on upstream gamescope without any modifications

Current Behavior

I followed the steps to build it, but it does not find all the libraries.
I have no clue about how linux works. I can only copy commands.

And those I found can not build it on Kubuntu 24.10.
Why cant I simply download a program, unzip and start it, like in Windows?

Why make it so complicated to use this program that is not made for IT professionals but for gamers?

Steps To Reproduce

go to youtube, search for Ubuntu 24.10 gamescope install

follow the commands that people posted.
the second one to get all the files does give an error about a library not found as it is not part of the whatever it is called in linux.

You can't build gamescope there because Ubuntu, being a Debian's derivative, is constantly outdated. It is simply a bad distro for gaming.
For gaming you generally want newest software/drivers, so better use some Arch-based distro instead (that's what SteamOS based on). Gamescope would be simply available in official repos there (pacman -S gamescope).

Why cant I simply download a program, unzip and start it, like in Windows?

You can, but it would not run anyway. If your distro has outdated dependencies, you are out of luck. Because there is no single Linux-based OS.

I was able to build gamescope on Linux Mint 22 (which is based on Ubuntu 24 Noble), by the normal method of "repeatedly install whatever dependencies meson complains about". The only caveat was having to use (as described here) a mildly old gamescope version before the wayland dependency was updated to a newer one than in the ubuntu repos.
