Strandings, shifting cargoes of lumber, near capsizings, broken masts, shredded sails from the storms she had bested, and men lost overboard forever to the relentless sea had been her lot. Demand for alcohol soared, and many vessels were pressed into smuggling service.\n\nRum running was a popular method of importing illegal whiskey. These vessels would steam offshore, take a load of liquor from a larger ship, and return to sell the cargo at a large profit to Rum Row operators. She was pressed into service after the Ward Line lost two previous passenger liners to grounding and fire.\n\nHer last cruise departed from Lower Manhattan on a cold January afternoon in 1935, heading due south toward Cuba. She lagged along the New Jersey coast for a compass calibration and was overtaken by the much slower Norwegian tanker Talisman. Suddenly, the Mohawk turned and veered across the tanker\'s course. The Talisman\'s bow plunged deeply into the Mohawk\'s port side, creating a huge gash in the liner\'s hull. Taking on water and listing badly, she sank in less than an hour.\n\nThe Mohawk name is not a lucky one. In 1925 the Clyde Liner Mohawk caught fire and sank in Delaware Bay. Her replacement (also named Mohawk) collided with the Old Dominion steamer Jefferson in heavy fog. She was headed for Fall River, Massachusetts. Following wartime procedure, she sailed unescorted on a zigzag course with all lights off. The seaman on watch spotted two running lights in the distance and assumed they belonged to a local fishing boat. The Resor changed course to clear the boat, and a few minutes later torpedoes struck. Disguised and highly trained British crews were very effective against the marauding submarines.\n\nAfter the war, the 263-foot ship performed survey and freighter duties along the Pacific Coast under the names Chiapas and La Playa de Ensenada.
