naturally you should be able to pick the language, and it should respect your choice above its own guess. But the default setting should be 'auto' and if you have 'auto' selected it should do a quick feature analysis and syntax hilight based on what you pasted in.

I bet a naive bayesian filter could classify buffer contents very easily. I bet static analysis could generat a set of bins that could be applied in javascript
on the fly pretty cheaply.
That would be fun to write too.
