Popup menu completion stops at the '.' character

After invoking the recent pages menu (with ,m) page names are displayed in the menu as namespace.pagename. But if I want to reduce the number of pages shown by typing the first few characters, I can only type the namespace. When I type the '.' the list disappears, so I am not able to restrict the list any further.
