Show icon on tab when it has unread messages

It would be nice if there could be an icon added on the tab when there is unread messages. I would like to be able to see if there are unread messages but I don't want notifications interrupting my workflow.

I experimented with this idea a while ago. I tired displaying the number of unread messages within the favicon. You can see the work here (Warning: old code that died a long time ago).

While working on that feature, I ran into a roadblocking issue caused by Campfire reporting the incorrect number of unread messages. But, I think that issues could be avoided if you only want the icon to convey whether there are any new messages, rather than the number of unread messages.
