Built-in Update System. #78
Comments
This isn't a bad idea, but issues #26 and #71 suggest that F-Droid is very much in the works and that Google Play is a possibility. The Windows-style upgrade model you're suggesting would be a good idea if the F-Droid and Google Play things don't work out, or face lengthy delays (IMO), but I am not sure it makes sense with arrival in one or both stores seemingly imminent, especially since it varies from customary Android app behavior. I think the bottom for me personally with this, assuming that F-Droid is right around the corner and Google Play is potentially coming after that, would be how much development time adding this in-app updating mechanism would take away from other stuff. It wouldn't make sense for the devs to devote countless hours to creating it and making sure it works, only to then pull it out in a week never to be seen or heard from again when Iceweasel is on F-Droid. On the other hand, if someone can code this in five minutes, it suddenly does begin to make a lot of sense. I can't say how difficult this would or wouldn't be, because my knowledge of coding is not sufficient (Or existent, for that matter. ;) ). |
Something like http://watchthatpage.com/ might be a temporary workaround for individual users until Iceweasel hits F-Droid and/or Google Play and can receive automatic updates that way. If an individual sets up a service like the above and asks it to email them every time there is a change to https://github.com/fork-maintainers/iceweasel/releases, that should allow them to click through the emails with Iceweasel and install each update without having to compulsively check the updates page for new releases. I realize this isn't the full functionality envisioned by the original post of the thread, but it might be a improvement for him over the status quo, as the maintainers of Iceweasel work towards being in some stores that have Android-style automatic update functionality. Disclaimer: I have no idea how trustworthy (or not) watchthatpage is. I simply remembered that there was something like that out there, and then did a quick web search (That was the top result for whatever terms I searched). I should also mention that it is an http:// site instead of an https:// site, so it's inherently insecure by today's standards- don't enter anything in there that you wouldn't mind sharing with the world (i.e. Don't reuse you banking password or hand them your Social Security number or something), especially if you share wifi with others or are accessing public wifi. |
Didn't know about such website , yup this might be a temp solution |
You can also click the dropdown on the "Watch" button in GitHub and choose to be notified on releases only. It will email you when a new release is sent. GitHub also has RSS feeds for releases, so putting that on a feed reader should work as well. |
May I recommend on a standard fashion? RSS #632 |
For the current distribution situation, this is a good idea。 |
What is the user problem or growth opportunity you want to see solved?
I was thinking what if a "Check for Update" option is added in the setting.
How do you know that this problem exists today? Why is this important?
I was checking the about section and thaught what if a Check for Update is added in-app then it will be convenient to user to check for updates within app rather than going to GitHub release ( not that it's hard , just an ease of access) since Iceweasel is not available on F-Droid or Google Play Store at the moment.
Who will benefit from it?
All the users checking for update.
