Foundry Virtual Tabletop has a broad international community and the core software (as of version 0.7.9) is available in 14 languages. All translations are community created by real people but few contain machine translations. The game is in American English by default.

For additional translations (including ones for game systems) see the list of translation modules on the Foundry VTT website (always up to date) or the Translations page here in the wiki (may not be up to date).

Installing a Translation Module

  1. The easiest way to install a module is to right click the "Latest version" link of the language you would like to install and copy the link. Note that the latest version is likely to only support the newest version of the game.
  2. In Foundry VTT open the "Add-On Modules" tab. add-on_modules_tab.png
  3. Click the "Install Module" button. modules_install_module_button.png
  4. At the bottom of the window click on the text field in the center (https://path/to/module.json) and use Ctrl + V (Cmd + V on a Mac) to paste the copied URL into the field. modules_manifest_url.png
  5. Press the "Install" button.

Changing the Language in the Menu

After installing a translation module:

  1. Go to the "Configuration" tab. configuration_tab.png
  2. Select your language from the "Default Settings" drop-down menu. The correct language will usually have "core" in the name. configuration_default_language_setting.png
  3. Click the "Save Changes" button. configuration_save_changes_button.png
  4. Click the "Yes" button in the dialog that pops up to close the game and change the language. configuration_yes_button.png
  5. Open the game and proceed with Changing the Language below. Doing the steps in Enabling a Translation Module is also recommended.

Enabling a Translation Module

Some translation modules provide translations for things like the TinyMCE text editor or the names of the icons shown in the map note configuration window. To allow the module to do this, it needs to be enabled in the world. Note that enabling the module does not change the language in the world. Even though the translation module is listed in the modules, enabling it may not change anything or provide additional translations.

You must be the Gamemaster or have the "Modify Configuration Settings" permission to do the following.

  1. Open a world.
  2. Go to the World Game Settings tab. world_game_settings_tab.png
  3. Click the "Manage Modules" button. world_manage_modules_button.png
  4. Find the translation module by name and click the checkbox in front of it. module_management_translation.png
  5. Click the "Save Module Settings" button. module_management_save_module_settings.png

Changing the Language

  1. Open a world.
  2. Go to the World Game Settings tab. world_game_settings_tab.png
  3. Click the "Configure Settings" button. world_configure_settings_button.png
  4. Select your language from the "Language Preference" drop-down. world_configure_language_preference_setting.png
  5. Click the "Save Changes" button. world_configure_save_changes_button.png
  6. This world and the setup menu are now in your chosen language.

Contributing

If you would like to help with translating Foundry VTT, it's modules, or game systems, the best way is to join your local Discord community listed in the table above and ask for more information there. You can also translated selected packages using an online interface in the Foundry Hub Weblate service. If your language is not listed in the table of supported translations, your best bet is to ask for advice on the #translations channel on the official Foundry VTT Discord server and look into the localization guides.
