I discovered when using vi(1) (or is it actually vim(1) under the hood?) that I don't know how to press escape to change modes.

I managed to exit insert mode by 'ctrl-d', but is there a way to trigger 'esc' in general?

(This post was heavily edited due to confusing '^' with 'esc'.)
