I am looking to adapt this for distributed storage systems. I think if we split the API and adapters as separate packages, one could import only the core which would be lighter.

How often and how much does whatwg change? Could there be abstractions that are more stable across releases?

the async version of whatwg have not change so much... I think they are mostly focusing on making the sync access handle atm.
