Rules of thumb at https://www.gnu.org/software/libtool/manual/html_node/Updating-version-info.html remind to "Update the version information only immediately before a public release of your software"

FWIW, prepared a few "last-minute commits" on https://github.com/networkupstools/nut/tree/prepare-release-2.8.0 branch:

to bump the library versions (major numbers for those impacted, with current release's fightwarn activities changing some int types in headers),
to set the new release number (to tag that commit later),
and to prepare iterations for nest release (set "2.8.0.1" like we had "2.7.4.1" for some time).
