Description of typo, bug or error
In CL, it seems that all abbreviation matches are listed as related synonyms rather than exact synonyms. I think that an abbreviation is an exact match to its expanded form.
CL term examples
"RAS cell" for "respiratory airway secretory cell" (CL:4052031)
"PNEC" for "pulmonary neuroendocrine cell" (CL:1000223)
Other ontologies (examples)
Other ontologies seem to list abbreviations as exact matches.

I think it comes down to arguments around the meaning and use of the synonym fields. Acronyms/abbreviations are often used as exact synonyms in specific contexts/papers (which we can reference). But, being short, they often have very different meanings in other contexts. I think it is valuable to be able to capture the former sense, but currently we do not.
Note - All abbreviations should also have an abbreviation tag.
I think it is always important to discuss these issues in the context of use-cases. I'd be happy to re-open for discussion in the light of current use-cases & technical developments (e.g. in LLMs).
