A tuft cell that is part of the colonic epithelium, specialized in microbial sensing within the dense colonic microbiota. Unlike small intestinal tuft cells, it plays a minimal role in type 2 immunity, instead detecting bacterial metabolites via taste signalling pathways. This cell also serves as a reserve stem cell, capable of regenerating other epithelial cell types during injury or stress.
