Consider setting up a few automated mails when people join as a member. This to keep people engaged as well as to not flood them with info
Create a page that more clearly explains why and how to join
Make it clear it is no longer obligatory to be put on the public membership list

I've just checked and I think it's possible with Mailchimp automation! 👍
