How do I prevent Quarto from injecting LaTeX package caption?

Description

Hi! I am trying to write a Journal Format extension for JASA (the other JASA...) but the documentclass they provide JASA.cls loads revtex4-2 which conflicts with caption (see), which in turn is injected by Quarto (here).

Is there a way to prevent Quarto from injecting the package caption? Or can you think of other solutions?

Modify the partials and/or template as done for journal extensions published either by Quarto team or the community.

Note that caption is used for cross-reference, so for this part, I'm not sure there is really a way around it.

Edit: you could target LaTeX format with format: latex then post process the file via a post-render script https://quarto.org/docs/projects/scripts.html#pre-and-post-render
This would make your extension a project+format extension though.

I'm assuming you did look in LaTeX forums, etc., but I believe the LaTeX community must have faced this conflict before, no solution/workaround were found?

An alternative would be to know exactly what the package included in the class is for and if it is only for cross-reference and that caption produces the same result, it's possible to ask/tell the editor of the small change you make.

I cannot modify the partials/extensions because the caption package is injected by Quarto with a filter during rendering and not included via partials, as per the link I provided above. Is there a way to prevent the filter from applying?

There is no workaround for the conflict of revtex and caption (and the entire class is built on revtex so it is caption that has to go).

I don't think you can disable the cross-reference which is one of the main features of Quarto.

So you are left with the post-processing solution I suggested.

Can you try setting crossref option to false ?

This should opt-out any crossref processing by quarto to happen. But this mean you can't benefit for Quarto's cross ref mechanism and need to use raw LaTeX directly.

Unless this does not work anymore for some reason... which is something I wondered in the past already 🤔

That could be an option, thanks! For the time being I put the task of creating an extension for JASA to the side. They still ask for a LaTeX file, figures named consecutively, bib entries in the latex file rather than in a separate file and so on, which possibly makes a simple extension not feasible (and I end up using LaTeX for submissions to JASA anyway, so probably not worth it, unless they simplify the submission instructions). :)

Ok we've been discussing the problem and having a way to forcing the introduction of package is something we want to do. No timeline though.

We understand some journals have strict rules and so we need more way for Extension developers to opt out Quarto features hard to make compatible with those. That would be at the cost of developers needing to do more manual integration through filter and custom AST from quarto.

We'll document that better in the future.

Thanks, that will be helpful! :) Yeah, I don't know of other journals in my field, but JASA (Acoustical Society of America) even compiles the TeX file when you submit it and every time I submit something there are always issues even when I use their LaTeX template so it's not really a Quarto problem 🤣
