<h2>Summary and Conclusions</h2>
<ul>
<li>Two schools, out of 47 monitored, exceeded legal limits for the level of nitrogen dioxide - a traffic pollutant</li>
<li>These schools are within a few metres of a busy road</li>
<li>The legal limit for nitrogen dioxide is set as an average figure over a year and is <b>40 μgm<sup>-3</sup></b> (micrograms per metre cubed).</li>
<li>However, children can be exposed to high levels of pollution in the car and at home too</li>
<li>Nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) has reduced in recent years</li>
<li>To protect your children's health, try to find a route to school that avoids busy roads</li>
<li>Try to help to reduce pollution by walking, cycling, using public transport or car - sharing instead of driving</li>
<li>Read the council's <a href="https://democracy.bristol.gov.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=17389#mgDocuments" target="_blank">plan to clean up the air in Bristol<i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></li>

<h2>Schools monitoring project</h2>
<p>Late in 2017 BCC decided to implement an air quality monitoring campaign focussing on schools, as a result of concern from parents. In order to monitor in the areas of most need the following criteria were used to determine the schools to monitor.</p>
<ul>
<li>School is within the <a href="/explore/dataset/air-quality-management-areas/map/?location=12,51.46092,-2.57316&basemap=jawg.streets" target="_blank">AQMA<i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a></li>
<li>School is 100m or less from a main road</li>
<li>The centre point of the school was used for this criterion</li>
</ul>

<b>The two schools shown as red icons are the only ones where air pollution was worse than the legal limits.</b>
<br />
Monitoring has now ceased at schools where the concentrations of NO<sub>2</sub> are lower than the legal limits.

<h2>Data for the monitored schools</h2>
<p>
The data shown below are annual mean concentrations of NO<sub>2</sub> (nitrogen dioxide) in 2018. NO<sub>2</sub> is a traffic pollutant mainly emitted by diesel vehicles so concentrations are higher than normal when the site is close to a main road.
<br />
12 readings are taken in a year. These are averaged and adjusted for bias to give an annual mean value.

Continuous air quality measurements at Parson Street School
</h2>
<p>
The measurements shown above are from <a href="/assets/theme_image/dt_closeup.JPG" target="_blank">diffusion tubes<i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i>.</a> We also monitor nitrogen dioxide using an automatic instrument at one school - <a href="/explore/embed/dataset/air-quality-monitoring-sites/map/?disjunctive.pollutants&q=siteid%3D215&sort=siteid&location=18,51.43271,-2.60469&basemap=jawg.streets" target="_blank">Parson Street School<i class="fa fa-external-link" aria-hidden="true"></i></a> in Bedminster. The annual mean data from this school are shown below, and indicate that concentrations have fallen in recent years.
