Notes

Why change up for SustainOSS?

[Pia] We saw ourselves doing for a 3rd eyar in a row sustain and started to worry about what new things we had to say. Last year was amazing, but we failed a bit in creating tangible projects. Losing connection between conferences. Maybe a bit of repeating ourselves for a 3rd year in a row. More need to articulate things from conference. Maybe this year we can experiment with a variety of sustain meetups that don't run (or just help) and fund them. Try to avoid the Visa issues again. Asia, Africa, US, etc. Enable other countries to take them on and do it themselves.

Make the report into a toolkit that the communities can take on. Facilitate guidelines, Code of Conduct, Branding, etc, all under the "Sustain Summit" brand.. "Sustain Community" for local meetup.

[Alanna] I have run distributed events before. Can front logistics and work behind the scenes with ideas. Toolkit, use website to showcase events. Pick week and ask all to host during that week. Put up a form "Are you interested in hosting..." , filter and get in touch to support them. Assets, logo, sponsorships? As them to take pictures and videos, and share. Encourage kick-off events for ongoing local communities.

[Pia] We want ot see projects take place. Someone to film there maybe. Same questions / interviews. Move away from having the same faces to having a diverse set of people talking about sustain. It's hard for us to take the role on again. Different value prop from what it was over the past years.

[Justin] Utilize forum. Put everything in forum so we can all see their progress on what they did and what they are talking about.

[Ben] A legitimate reason to write the report from the last event as a precursor to the next event. It's been a struggle to find new messages from the event. It would help a lot to do that. The thing is that we don't want to go have the same convos again. Let's get others talking about it.

[Alanna] Is it because we know what the issues are? Is it defined?

[Pia] Yes. It's now important to build a network of people interested in this. There are people who are very high up in orgs that are working on these solutions. It's hard to do all at once because we are all very busy. Sustain events / meetups will likely not implement stuff. We don't want to do again for the 3rd year.

[Gunner] Having done a lot of distributed .. we need to find out what are the non-negotiables of a sustain event? For example, X could take our name and use it as a sales pitch. We want to be crystal clear on what it means to run a sustain event. B/c of lack of momentum right now around sustain, we would want to envision some programming in near term to re-stoke interest. Do all within one week period would be great, but it would be difficult. Do some programming, get people updated thoughts on sustainability. Areas where very interesting things is around governance right now.

[Pia] We can have not only distributed meetups / comunity events local, but also run a sustainability event on one topic.. small scale event we run. Expectation is not to match last year.

[Alanna] Concerned about the practicalities of who will front this project whatever it turns out to be. Worries b/c limited capacity in this team. If we were to run the thing on Governance, would it be in Europe? online?

[Gunner] How to do build virtual before physical? I don't think we should decide anything on this call. Ask community.

[Eric] Spoke a bit about the podcast and demand

[Pia] Maybe make one of the podcasts about Sustain.

[Alanna] How do we go to community?

[Pia] Send email to everyone who came to sustain and we share this idea along with others to them. Podcast, Report, Maintainer survey, etc.

[Alanna] What is that we (in the past 2 sustains) do we not want to talk about again? Making a strong call of "now is the time for these actions", we can get people excited or direction.

[Pia] Indeed created sustainability fund. Started incorporating .. , also Greg Bloom's work. A lot of stuff came from Sustain. We need to be better at communicating what is happening.

[Alanna] Email to get feedback. Have another convo with this team?

[Pia] Some people from Africa and Cat should be involved as well.

[Alanna] I will write up draft for publication for teams review.

[Gunner] I am happy to do a virtual session on Governance

[Pia] Greg is working on some workshops.

[Alanna] Need to support real progress on actions and initiatives. Sustain has taught us that governance is important, so we are progressing this project...

Thanks @coderberry ! Adding in my notes as well:

Decentralised event idea

  • one possibility but need more feedback from community to decide
  • if we go this way, need to decide the non-negotiables
  • risks: people we don't know well running sub-par events under our brand and there not being enough excitement or interest to host events

Governance

  • key issue that has emerged from past events and in the ecosystem generally
  • we could support progress on governance initiatives like TL;DR governance
  • idea to have a virtual conference or webinar on this topic

Podcast

  • @coderberry sent a message to SustainOSS community looking for people to come on the podcast and got a very positive response
  • let's do an episode about SustainOSS, where @piamancini articulates the key outcomes from the past two years

Email to all attendees

  • share report that @BenJam is working on
  • share podcast about SustainOSS
  • share news of outcomes from past events ( Indeed fund, corporate index, Ostram's principles applied to OSS, OSCA)
  • ask for input about the future of the event

[Pia] Yes. It's now important to build a network of people interested in this.

Checking in from https://sfosc.org/! I believe Adam has gotten in touch earlier, perhaps we should meet again and see what we might collaborate on.
