Hi,

I'm trying to install VisIt 3.0.1 on a Fedora 26 Linux box. I downloaded
the Linux - x86_64 64 bit Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.5, #
4.18.9-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 #1 SMP, gcc 4.8.5 tarfile.

However, the gui does not even start, issuing the error message: 'error
while loading shared libraries: libicui18n.so.50: cannot open shared object
file: No such file or directory'

Examining the shared object (*.so) files in
visit3_0_1.linux-x86_64/3.0.1/linux-x86_64/lib/, I've found that some of
them depends on libicui18n.so.57 (for instance libwinutil.so or
libvtkqt.so), which is OK as libicui18n.so.57 is the version installed by
the OS; however, other files depend on libicui18n.so.50 (it seems most or
all of the libQt5*.so files), which produces the broken dependency
mentioned above.

What's the reason for this dependency on two distinct releases for the
libicu library, and is there any fix or workaround to solve this issue?

Hi Nicola,

There are incompatibilities between the various versions of Linux, typically because of shared
libraries. The redhat 7 version will not work on recent Fedora versions. I have been working on
building VisIt on several versions of Linux using containers. I built a version on Fedora 27. It?s
one version of Fedora later, but it might work. It would have the highest chance of working of the
ones I?ve built. Can you give that a try? Here is a link to the distribution.

thanks for the prompt reply.

I've downloaded and installed the fedora 27 release. When I start it with
the command /usr/pkg/visit/visit3_0_1.fedora27-x86_64/bin/visit, it does
create the expected GUI windows, however only the icons are visible, and
there is no text at all (just empty space where the text should be).
On the terminal windows the following error messages show up:
Running: gui3.0.1
QFontDatabase: Cannot find font directory
/usr/pkg/visit/visit3_0_1.fedora27-x86_64/3.0.1/linux-x86_64/bin/lib/fonts.
Note that Qt no longer ships fonts. Deploy some (from
http://dejavu-fonts.org for example) or switch to fontconfig.
QFontDatabase: Cannot find font directory

Hi Nicola,

It looks like the solution may be to install fontconfig on the system I?m build on. I have done so
and I?m rebuilding all the third party libraries and VisIt. This will take most of the day.

Hi Eric,

this new version works well, thanks!

I've also discovered that the original 3.0.1 release, the one for Redhat
Enterprise Linux 7.5, works on Fedora 26 if one compiles and installs the
ICU library version 50, and creates the proper symlinks to the various
libicu*.so.50 files inside the linux-x86_64/lib directory.
So this could be a solution too.

this new version works well, thanks!

I've also discovered that the original 3.0.1 release, the one for Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.5, works
on Fedora 26 if one compiles and installs the ICU library version 50, and creates the proper
symlinks to the various libicu*.so.50 files inside the linux-x86_64/lib directory.
So this could be a solution too.

It looks like the solution may be to install fontconfig on the system I?m build on. I have done so
and I?m rebuilding all the third party libraries and VisIt. This will take most of the day.

Would it possible to identify these sort of dependencies, and package them
inside the visit distribution?

My ultimate goal would be to have a version of VisIt packaged where almost
all of the dependencies were satisfied by the Anaconda Python distribution
(or its much smaller Miniconda).
https://www.anaconda.com/distribution/

That version of python and its extensive package library are built against
an old distribution, like Red Hat 6.  That one linux version they
distribute then runs on most newer Linux platforms.

I have my own project which uses Anaconda and the more modern C++ compiler
from devtoolset-6
https://www.softwarecollections.org/en/scls/rhscl/devtoolset-6/

It does appear, that Anaconda now provides modern C++ compilers as well.

Hi Juan,

That looks interesting. It looks like I would start with the devtoolset-6 docker container and build
VisIt against as many of the system libraries as possible. I could then get an anaconda container
and install VisIt and see if it worked. Is that what you had in mind?

thanks for the prompt reply.

I've downloaded and installed the fedora 27 release. When I start it with the command
/usr/pkg/visit/visit3_0_1.fedora27-x86_64/bin/visit, it does create the expected GUI windows,
however only the icons are visible, and there is no text at all (just empty space where the text
should be).
On the terminal windows the following error messages show up:
Running: gui3.0.1
QFontDatabase: Cannot find font directory
/usr/pkg/visit/visit3_0_1.fedora27-x86_64/3.0.1/linux-x86_64/bin/lib/fonts.
Note that Qt no longer ships fonts. Deploy some (from http://dejavu-fonts.org for example) or switch
to fontconfig.

There are incompatibilities between the various versions of Linux, typically because of shared
libraries. The redhat 7 version will not work on recent Fedora versions. I have been working on
building VisIt on several versions of Linux using containers. I built a version on Fedora 27. It?s
one version of Fedora later, but it might work. It would have the highest chance of working of the
ones I?ve built. Can you give that a try? Here is a link to the distribution.

I'm trying to install VisIt 3.0.1 on a Fedora 26 Linux box. I downloaded the Linux - x86_64 64 bit
Redhat Enterprise Linux 7.5, # 4.18.9-1.el7.elrepo.x86_64 #1 SMP, gcc 4.8.5 tarfile.

However, the gui does not even start, issuing the error message: 'error while loading shared
libraries: libicui18n.so.50: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory'
Examining the shared object (*.so) files in visit3_0_1.linux-x86_64/3.0.1/linux-x86_64/lib/, I've
found that some of them depends on libicui18n.so.57 (for instance libwinutil.so or libvtkqt.so),
which is OK as libicui18n.so.57 is the version installed by the OS; however, other files depend on
libicui18n.so.50 (it seems most or all of the libQt5*.so files), which produces the broken
dependency mentioned above.

What's the reason for this dependency on two distinct releases for the libicu library, and is there
any fix or workaround to solve this issue?

Hi Eric,

My interest is an application that can be downloaded and run from any linux
distribution.

Here is a script I use to build my application in a centos 6 docker
container.

It is run from an automated travis ci build:

It installs the devtoolset 6 tools and also Miniconda (Anaconda with
default minimal installation).  It uses Python 3,  but Python 2 is also
available:

My scripts use hard coded paths to the compiler

but devtoolset 6 also has environment scripts:

The wonderful thing about the compiler is that it links against the system
libraries and libstdc++, but also statically links in features that are not
available on a centos 6 default system.

For example:

/opt/rh/devtoolset-6/root/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-redhat-linux/6.3.1/libstdc++.so

Use the shared library, but some functions are only in

the static library, so try that secondarily.  */

OUTPUT_FORMAT(elf64-x86-64)

INPUT ( /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6 -lstdc++_nonshared )

All newer versions of libstdc++.so.6 should work, or the library itself can
be redistributed.

Build packages like cmake are available with the miniconda distribution, as
well as qt 5.  For example:

conda create --name buildvisit python=2

conda activate buildvisit

conda install -y  cmake icu pyqt

The headers would then be in:

${CONDA_PREFIX}/include

Any unavailable dependencies would have to be downloaded separately.  Any
shared libraries not available from miniconda or the centos 6 system could
then be packaged with VisIt.
