Fedora 39 beta works on Fedora 40

I have installed Fedora 39 beta on Fedora 40 and it starts with no errors and used it to display a silo image and it worked fine. Not tested extensively but so far so good.

Any change you can build a version with direct GL support rather than mesa? We used to have a RHEL version that had this. By the way, I tried to build visit on Fedora 40 but it failed at some point. The problem with 40 is that it has both qt5 and qt6 installed (when using KDE).

Thank you for testing the new Fedora build. Unfortunately, these are done via Docker containers, so must use Mesa.
We are working to regain access to a physical RHEL system so we can build with GL support.

The build issues on the newer Fedora system I believe have been resolved. The errors were due to newer g++ than what we normally test with. I have a couple of PR's in the works with the final changes needed for the build script to work. Once those are merged I can provide an updated build script that should work.

@sambo57u, here is a modified build_visit script that should work. I put 'mod' in the name so it can be distinguished from the release version of the script.

There are problems building CFITSIO, PIDX, and, ADVIO. You can tell the build script to skip them by adding
--no-advio --no-pidx --no-cfitsio to the rest of the options sent to the build_visit_3_4_1_mod script.
There is a ticket in our tracker to address this. #19570.

First try --skip-opengl-context-check, it probably doesn't check as many places as CMake does for finding GL.

OK....that has started the build. I have the latest nvidia drivers installed.

we will see what happens. The way it works on Fedora is that you have both mesa and nivdia from rpmfusion installed but the nvidia rpms redefine all the paths and ibrary names to use nvidia drivers. If the build ends correctly we will ssee if it found nvidia GL correctly (it should). Otherwise I can remove mesa and build again.

Also, I presume it is running NVIDIA GL, hard to tell because libglvnd seems to manage which libraries are used. Is there any other way to find out?

CMake picked up this OpenGL: /usr/lib64/libOpenGL.so, is that the NVIDIA version?

/usr/lib64/libOpenGL.so is coming from a package qt-x11-4.8.7-76.fc40.x86_64 as a link to libQtOpenGL.so.4.8.7. if I do an ldd on that I see that it is using libglvnd libraries.

The actual libraries have names like libGLX_mesa.so.0.0.0 and libGLX_nvidia.so.550.90.07 Somehow libglvnd figures out which one to use.

In a few hours I will go home and try to run this on my laptop, which only has mesa and intel HD graphics. It will either not run or libglvnd will do its trick.

It worked fine on laptop too. The newly compiled visit does not have anything related to mesa in the lib directory, whereas the older one does. The qt-x11-4.8.7-76 rpm goes back all the way to the birth of Fedora. It seems to provide interfaces. The
definition is "This package contains base tools, like string, xml, and network handling". It has many other components than qt-x11. The lib directory has libQt6OpenGL.so.6.4.2 in it. If one does ldd on that, all the GL related system libraries are going to libglvnd ones. The desktop system is running NVIDIA since it loads the kernel module, otherwise the nouveau module would be running to use mesa. I am inclined to conclude that a single built like this would work on whatever the system is running.

It is definitely using NVIDIA GL. I have a time-dependent volume rendering visualization that is very slow with the fedora39 beta version in the repository but very fast with the new build. It is also correct that the new build can use whatever rendering engine is available on the system (due to libglvnd) nvidia or mesa.

I am a bit confused about the tags. What is the difference between 3.4RC and 3.4.2?

3.4RC (release candidate) is the branch where we put changes that will be included in our upcoming release, 3.4.2.

I am trying to build the 3.4RC using the same build script that bult 3.4.1. Everything seems compile fine but at the end I get an error about configuration of docs. Log is attached. Thanks for your help.

You can hand-modify the doc/CMakeLists.txt to remove the line add_dependencies(docs manuals).

It means you are working with a copy of VisIt without blt. If you cloned 3.4RC from git, you need to go to the root visit dir and type git submodule init then git submodule update for good measure. The docs alias is a workaround for some logic in the blt submodule.

I have been building 3.4RC's regularly on Fedora 40 using the build script that was given to me in this thread. After the last few git commits the build failed in, I believe, vtkm. I am attaching the log. Thanks!

I am able to build today's 3.4RC visit with using the build script you gave me in this thread on Fedora 41. Still using:

build_visit3_4_2_mod --no-advio --no-pidx --no-cfitsio --hdf5 --netcdf --silo --vtkm --skip-opengl-context-check --makeflags -j32

Thank you for the information. Glad to hear. We are in the process of building release assets for the 3.4.2 version, and they will be available for download in the next week or so. I created distros for Fedora39 and Fedora40.
