ARIB-TTML is capable to control a playback of the pre-installed short sound clips such as chime and alert sound.

This appears to be somewhat similar, though syntactically slightly different, to the TTML2 <audio> element's capabilities. One ARIB-TTML feature not present in TTML2 is the ability to specify that the clip loops, as a boolean.

There seems to be a constraint that the referenced audio clip is being broadcast at the appropriate (same) time, or is pre-installed. I found no references to any audio mixing directives, such as specifying gain, pan etc.

I would like to know more about the use case for the audio functionality in ARIB-TTML.

The Timed Text Working Group just discussed [WR/ARIB] Compatibility with ARIB-TTML / 4. Audio presentation imsc#549, and agreed to the following:

  • SUMMARY: TTWG is interested to know more about the usage of these features.
The full IRC log of that discussion <nigel> Topic: [WR/ARIB] Compatibility with ARIB-TTML / 4. Audio presentation imsc#549

<nigel> Cyril: I agree with @nigelmegitt's comment and would like to know more about the use cases.
<nigel> Nigel: Behind my question is "what is the use case specifically for playing audio back as
<nigel> .. part of a subtitle document?"
<nigel> .. I obviously have been working on an AD profile, but my assumption has always been
<nigel> .. that it can be an independent resource from the subtitle document.
<nigel> .. As an example, I'd be interested to know if they want to send audio renderings of the
<nigel> .. subtitle text as something like a pre-recorded version of speech to text, or if they are using
<nigel> .. it for audio description, or some other thing.
<nigel> SUMMARY: TTWG is interested to know more about the usage of these features.
