Extra upscaling OSD icon missing on native XDR upscaling?

Hello all, hopefully my title makes sense. I'm on the latest Sequoia 15.1 preview (24B5035e), but something is telling me that this icon has been missing for a while. I'm talking about the thing that appears in the Bezel UI (is it still called that? It's the macOS built in HUD for brightness, volume, keyboard brightness etc) when you go above 100% standard brightness?

I really miss it because I like to know if and when I'm utilizing the super brightness. Or am I Mandela affected (read: a habitual drug user who remembers nothing), and was there never an icon?

flicking that switch back and forth appears to make no difference. When I adjust my brightness via the keyboard, the brightness HUD (BezelUI?) appears, stock, and I can increase the brightness beyond standard 100% but there's no indication (besides the squawking of my retinas).

Hi @halfbrilliant - the extra OSD icon is still there but it appears only when you are using software XDR upscaling. If you switched to using (the superior) native XDR upscaling, you won't have this. This is intentional - the main reason for the extra icon was to indicate to the user when software XDR upscaling causes clipping in HDR content. Since native XDR upscaling does not have this + the SDR range itself is redefined, the indicator makes no sense.

If you are not using native XDR upscaling (the "BetterDisplay XDR" preset), then something else must be wrong, let me know if this is the case.

ah. Could we not have perhaps a smaller/more subtle indication that we're over the standard limit? But that's fair enough, consider me answered! Thank you for the almost unimaginable promptness :D

The problem is that with native XDR upscaling there is no clear marker as MacBooks adjust the max brightness dynamically depending on various factors. With software upscaling the distinction is clear - 100% is the max slider brightness, above that it's the EDR range where upscaling happens. With native the entire range is SDR and the only clear marker would be whether the nits is actually beyond 500 nits (or for newer MBPs 600 nits) - but this might happen at any %. So the best I could do is to show the current nits value.

The latest internal pre-release now has an option to show the current nits level as part of the native OSD with native XDR upscaling. Upscaling happens beyond 500-600 nits (depending on Mac model).

The internal pre-release can be enabled under Settings/Applications/Updates.
