Getting this error in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with the GNOME Desktop:

`RANDR Query Version' returned error -1
error while init

Any suggestions on what to try? Thank you.

Hi,
what kind of graphics processor do you have in your system and which driver do you use for it?
I assume that you are running Xorg and not Wayland graphical system.
After searching on the Internet for the error message, it could be possible that (a) some configuration is messing up the video driver or (2) xrandr-invert-colors is launched in a way that it is not able to connect to the X server.

I have the Intel® UHD Graphics 620. I'm using the default drivers for Intel that come with Ubuntu 16.04. Do you recommend updating the driver?

I'm running a pretty vanilla Ubuntu 16 LTS.

At the first sight I suspect that the video driver is buggy, because that GPU is relatively new. There are some slim chances that some relevant information appears about the issue in dmesg or Xorg log files, I recommend checking them.

Updating just the drivers probably doesn't worth it. Maybe trying out the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS from a bootable USB memory could be easier and safer, just copy the xrandr-invert-colors executable on it (hope it works without recompilation; if not then you will need to install development packages on the system on USB).
