Database cross references usage

Whenever possible, use 'database cross reference' to cite definitions or origins of a term.

Definitions references

  • Many or most definitions (currently) have been imported directly from NCIt and the definitions have been directly cited using NCIT:C000000. There will also be a 'database cross reference' for the entire MAXO term, as the term label and some synonyms.
  • While definitions are taken directly from NCIt, the preference is to have a journal, book, or other data source for reference. For a pubmed journal, use PMID:012345. For book, use ISBN:01234567. Another resources is GeneReviews. We use GeneReviews:NBK5191 for citation instead of the url (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK5191/).

Term references

  • Whenever possible, use 'database cross reference' at the term level to reference another term in a trusted, updated, relevant ontology. Use NCIT, UBERON, OGMS, NBO, and OBI for terms as necessary. Use others more sparingly. Also may use MESH, PMID, ISBN, GeneReviews, and other trusted sources as references when necessary.
