Layperson synonym annotation

Layperson synonyms are meant to be in plain language that can be understood by the general public. We add these synonyms in the same way as we add all synonyms, except that we mark them as being layperson and use has_exact_synonym. The following graphic shows what this should look like in Protege:

The method for creating these annotations is very similar to Abbreviation synonym annotation.

  1. Click Annotations '+' in the Class Annotations window.

  1. Scroll through the left panel select 'has_exact_synonym', and in the write panel write the new abbreviation synonym (make sure you are on the 'Literal' tab).

  1. On the newly created synonym annotation, click the '@' symbol to designate what type of synonym was created.

  1. In the new window, click the '+' symbol at the top of the box.

  1. In the left-hand panel, scroll to 'has_synonym_type'.

  1. In the right-hand panel, select 'Entity IRI' tab, select the 'Annotation Properties' tab, and scroll down to the 'synonym_type_property', select 'layperson term' below that property.

  1. Click 'OK' and you are done!

Finally, don't forget to put your name or ORCID as annotation database_cross_reference.
