How to use Square One features

Square One comes with several features that are not in Joomla. There are some visual changes to the template or tweaks to the interface as well which are not covered here.

Using the Extension Manager

The Extension Manager boasts some significant changes. When you are on the Install page, you will see a list of available extensions, as well as 3 options to upload and install, install from a folder, or install from a url which function exactly the same as in Joomla.

Available Extensions

Any extensions that are found in the update servers are listed here. Upon first installation, the list will include all of the Joomla extensions that were removed for Square One. You can select extensions and install them remotely from this list by checking the box and clicking on the Install toolbar button. You may need to be careful installing too many at once, due to limits on processing times of servers.

The list of extensions is built from the update servers, which also are responsible for notifying of updates. It loads the list from the servers, and if it detects the extension is already installed it will provide it as an update notification instead of as an available extension.

Update Sites

The update sites page will show you the update servers configured with your site. When you install new extensions, they may add to this list. You can disable an update site if you wish, or you can click on the site to see a list of the extensions it provides.

Using the Administrator Menu Manager

You are able to manage the administrator menu in Square One. Go to Menus->Administrator Menu and you'll see a list of the menu links. You can reorder items, disable them, and add new links. Administrator menu links that are for components will show only for users who have the Manager permission set in the component ACL.

Adding or Editing an Item

The Menu Item Type defines the type of item, which can be a link to a component, a list of the menus, a separator, or external link. The Menus type will add a list of the current menus. A Separator will act as a small bar between two links. An External Url type will allow you to link to any page. The Component type requires you to select the component you are linking to, which is what is used to check ACL.

The Menu Title is to be the translatable name for the link. You can input anything, but if you add the string to your language override file it will be translated into multiple languages if you have it installed. If you have a single language site, then there is no need to worry about translating the text.

The alias should be a unique identifier for the link, usually the title without spaces. The Link Image can be a link to the image to use, or select one of the classes available to use the default images. Fill in the Link field with the correct link to the page. You can usually copy the url from the page you wish to link to if you are creating a new item, but you only need to select from 'index.php' to the end.
